Florida, Oddly Enough

We had to let Chuck go this week. We’d hoped we’d have had a few more good years with him as long as he was comfortable and enjoying his life. But his internal clock was ticking. His body had had enough. I’m truly happy I could be here for him during this time, as hard as it was. My son and my partner came down. There have been things that had to be taken care of, other things can wait. For now, primarily, we wanted to keep company with his spirit as it takes its journey from this realm. We did some exploring of places that made Chuck love Florida. He’d fallen in love with this place when he was traveling across the US in a VW bus as a young man. Later in his life he met my mom and brought her here on many vacations before they moved here permanently over 10 years ago. She loved it too.

These are places that were a part of Chuck. Things he enjoyed about his environment. We’ve also burned tobacco for him, prayed. We’ve told some of his stories, and many more of those will be shared over time, now, as we remember him and celebrate his life.  At some point we will take his and mom’s ashes to the area in southern Ohio where he was originally from and inter them in his family plot.
Here are a few glimpses of the Florida that Chuck loved….

Chuck was  a man who loved simple things. Who was elegant and wise and humble and patient. Whose philosophy really was “keep it simple, keep it balanced.” He lived it.

I’m hoping he’s not the last of his kind, but he was a rare person.
