Trawling Through The Thrift Stores with Joseph Finn

It's been an incredibly busy week so I'm just giving you a weird recommendation.

I for some reason skipped The Last Action Hero when it came out in 1993.  Maybe I wasn't in the mood at 20 for this level of goofy Arnold Schwarzenegger or something, but until last night I somehow had not watched this....this...

Look, this movie is freaking weird.  I'm encountered a lot of meta humor over my 49 years, but this movie really digs in on a kid who accidentally jumps into a world that runs by the rules of '90s action flicks, where every bullet wound the lead gets is a flesh wound, any car hit by a bullet explodes and every cop is wearing what seems like fetish gear.  And hoo boy, does Arnold thrive in this role as that lead; Arnold knows exactly who is as an actor and knows how to play sincere goofiness.  Like, look at this.

Seriously, this is an actor who knows what he's here for.

And god, then there's the villain of the movie.  Charles Dance has been an incredibly dependable actor for decades, who can be absolutely terrifying but also always has an odd edge of humor to him.  (We Discworld fans know the TV movies aren't especially good, but his Vetinari is a delight.). And wow is he in fine form here, reminding me of his excellent work in The Golden Child.

Really, you should check this movie out; it's on Netflix currently and it's just a ton of fun.
