Happy Thursday, everyone! We’re here in Richmond now and settling in and I haven’t had a chance to check out any thrift stores yet (and most of our stuff is still on a moving truck heading this way) so just one more week of recommendations. And hey, let’s look at some home ownership gone wrong.
Dream Home (Wai dor lei ah yut ho) is a 2010 Hong Kong movie about a young professional woman joins and determined to buy an apartment in a new complex that has been erected where her family home used to be. As you can probably guess, things gets real complicated real quick. Imagine The Money Pit mixed with a slasher film and a dash of “well, they’re the kind of neighbor who had it coming.” Is it gory? Quite. Is it also a pretty good movie about getting priced out of a housing market? Also yes. It’s not a perfect movie but it does have a neat perfect ending. It’s currently available to stream on Shudder and AMC+ as well as for rental at all the usual places.
